A tag is a claim. To tag a passage with covenant or sacrifice or p-source is to argue that something in it belongs to a larger pattern - that it is not only what it says but also what kind of thing it is.
The vocabulary here spans two registers: thematic tags that cut across the whole Torah, and source-critical tags that map onto the Documentary Hypothesis’s four strands. They sit in productive tension. Source-critical tags ask who wrote this and when; thematic tags ask what keeps surfacing regardless. That sabbath cuts across all four hypothetical sources, while deuteronomistic-reforms belongs almost entirely to one book, is itself a kind of argument about the Torah’s shape.
