Asherah is the Canaanite mother goddess and consort of El, whose worship was represented by wooden poles or trees (Asherah poles). The Torah repeatedly prohibits Israel from setting up Asherah poles alongside altars (Deut 16:21), and Asherah worship was a persistent source of conflict throughout the biblical period.
