Edom is the region southeast of the Dead Sea, inhabited by the Edomites descended from Esau (Gen 25:30; 36:1). The name derives from the red pottage for which Esau sold his birthright (Gen 25:30). Israel requested passage through Edom during the wilderness journey and was refused (Num 20:14-21).
