Chapter 12
Purification after Childbirth

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses…,
יְהוָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־ מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōr — WLC · 1

“Say to the Israelites… -, ‘- A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be unclean for seven days, as she is during the days of her menstruation…

Λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς ὴλ καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς Γυνὴ ἥτις ἐὰν σπερματισθῇ καὶ τέκῃ ἄρσεν, καὶ ἀκάθαρτος ἔσται ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας, κατὰ τὰς ἡμέρας τοῦ χωρισμοῦ τῆς ἀφέδρου αὐτῆς ἀκάθαρτος ἔσται· — LXX Swete · 2

And on the eighth day the flesh of [the boy’s] foreskin is to be circumcised.

The woman shall continue in purification from her bleeding for thirty-three… days She must not touch anything sacred or go into the sanctuary… until the days of her purification are complete.

καὶ τριάκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς καθίσεται ἐν αἵματι ἀκαθάρτῳ αὐτῆς· παντὸς ἀγγίου οὐχ ἅψεται, καὶ εἰς τὸ ἁγιαστήριον οὐκ εἰσελεύσεται, ἕως ἂν πληρωθῶσιν αἱ ἡμέραι καθάρσεως αὐτῆς. — LXX Swete · 4

If, however, she gives birth to a daughter, [the woman] will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstruation. Then she must continue in purification from her bleeding for sixty-six… days.
וְאִם־ תֵלֵ֔ד נְקֵבָ֣ה וְטָמְאָ֥ה שְׁבֻעַ֖יִם כְּנִדָּתָ֑הּ תֵּשֵׁ֖ב עַל־ טָהֳרָֽה׃ דְּמֵ֥י וְשִׁשִּׁ֥ים יוֹם֙ וְשֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים wə·’im- ṯê·lêḏ nə·qê·ḇāh wə·ṭā·mə·’āh šə·ḇu·‘a·yim kə·nid·dā·ṯāh tê·šêḇ ‘al- ṭā·ho·rāh də·mê wə·šiš·šîm yō·wm wə·šê·šeṯ yā·mîm — WLC · 5
ἐὰν δὲ θῆλυ τέκῃ, καὶ ἀκάθαρτος ἔσται δὶς ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας κατὰ τὴν ἄφεδρον· καὶ ἑξήκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ ἕξ καθεσθήσεται ἐν αἴματι ἀκαθάρτῳ αὐτῆς. — LXX Swete · 5

When the days of her purification are complete, whether for a son or for a daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting a year-old… lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering.
יְמֵ֣י טָהֳרָ֗הּ וּבִמְלֹ֣את׀ לְבֵן֮ א֣וֹ לְבַת֒ תָּבִ֞יא אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ אֶל־ פֶּ֥תַח אֹֽהֶל־ מוֹעֵ֖ד בֶּן־ שְׁנָתוֹ֙ כֶּ֤בֶשׂ לְעֹלָ֔ה וּבֶן־ יוֹנָ֥ה אוֹ־ תֹ֖ר לְחַטָּ֑את yə·mê ṭā·ho·rāh ū·ḇim·lōṯ lə·ḇên ’ōw lə·ḇaṯ tā·ḇî ’el- hak·kō·hên ’el- pe·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel- mō·w·‘êḏ ben- šə·nā·ṯōw ke·ḇeś lə·‘ō·lāh ū·ḇen- yō·w·nāh ’ōw- ṯōr lə·ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ — WLC · 6
καὶ ὅταν ἀναπληρωθῶσιν αἱ ἡμέραι καθάρσεως αὐτῆς ἐφ’ υἱῷ ἢ ἐπὶ θυγατρί, προσοίσει ἀμνὸν ἐνιαύσιον ἄμωμον εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα καὶ νοσσὸν περιστερᾶς ἢ τρυγόνα περὶ ἁμαρτίας ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου πρὸς τὸν ἱερέα· — LXX Swete · 6

And [the priest] will present them before [[YHWH|the LORD]] and make atonement for her; and she shall be ceremonially cleansed from her flow of blood. This is the law for a woman giving birth, whether to a male or to a female.
וְהִקְרִיב֞וֹ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ וְכִפֶּ֣ר עָלֶ֔יהָ וְטָהֲרָ֖ה מִמְּקֹ֣ר דָּמֶ֑יהָ זֹ֤את תּוֹרַת֙ הַיֹּלֶ֔דֶת לַזָּכָ֖ר א֥וֹ לַנְּקֵבָֽה׃ wə·hiq·rî·ḇōw lip̄·nê Yah·weh wə·ḵip·per ‘ā·le·hā wə·ṭā·hă·rāh mim·mə·qōr dā·me·hā zōṯ tō·w·raṯ hay·yō·le·ḏeṯ laz·zā·ḵār ’ōw lan·nə·qê·ḇāh — WLC · 7
καὶ προσοίσει ἔναντι κυρίου, καὶ ἐξιλάσεται περὶ αὐτῆς ὁ ἱερεύς, καὶ καθαριεῖ αὐτὴν ἀπὸ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς. οὗτος ὁ νόμος τῆς τικτούσης ἄρσεν ἢ θῆλυ. — LXX Swete · 7

But if she cannot afford… a lamb, she shall bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. Then the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.’”

ἐὰν δὲ μὴ εὑρίσκῃ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτῆς τὸ ἱκανὸν εἰς ἀμνόν, καὶ λήμψεται δύο τρυγόνας ἢ δύο νοσσοὺς περι, μίαν εἰς ὁλοκαύτωμα καὶ μίαν περὶ ἁμαρτίας· καὶ ἑ ὶ αὐτῆς ὁ ἱερεύς, καὶ καθαρισθήσεται. — LXX Swete · 8
