Zelophehad’s Daughters Marry
1
Now the family heads of the clan… of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, one of the clans… of Joseph, approached Moses… and the leaders who were the heads… of the Israelite families and addressed them…,

Καὶ προσῆλθον οἱ ἄρχοντες φυλῆς υἱῶν Γαλαὰλ υἱοῦ υἱοῦ Μανασσὴ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς υἱῶν Ἰωσήφ, καὶ ἐλάλησαν ἔναντι καὶ ἔναντι Ἐλεαζὰρ τοῦ ἱερέως καὶ ἔναντι τῶν ἀρχόντων οἴκων πατριῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ· — LXX Swete · 1

saying, “When [[YHWH|the LORD]] commanded my lord to give the land as an inheritance to the Israelites… by lot, [He] also commanded [him] to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

καὶ εἶπαν τῷ κυρίῳ ἡμῶν ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ἀποδοῦναι τὴν γῆν τῆς κληρονομίας ἐν κλήρῳ τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, καὶ τῷ κυρίῳ συνέταξεν Κύριος δοῦναι τὴν κληρονομίαν Σαλπαὰδ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ ἡμῶν ταῖς θυγατράσιν αὐτοῦ· — LXX Swete · 2

But if they marry any of the men from the [other] tribes vvv of Israel…, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the portion of our fathers and added to the tribe into which they marry. So our allotted inheritance would be taken away.

καὶ ἔσονται ἑνὶ τῶν φυλῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ γυναῖκες, καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσεται ὁ κλῆρος αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς κατασχέσεως τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, καὶ προστεθήσεται εἰς κληρονομίαν τῆς φυλῆς οἷς ἆν γένωνται γυναῖκες, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ κλήρου τῆς κληρονομίας ἡμῶν ἀφαιρεθήσεται. — LXX Swete · 3

And when the Jubilee for the Israelites… comes, their inheritance will be added to the tribe into which they marry [and] taken away from the tribe of our fathers.”

So at the word of [[YHWH|the LORD]], Moses commanded the Israelites…: “The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks correctly.

This… is what [[YHWH|the LORD]] has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad -: They may marry… anyone they please…, provided they marry… within a clan of the tribe of their father.

No inheritance in Israel… may be transferred from tribe to tribe, because each vvv of the Israelites is to retain the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
וְלֹֽא־ נַחֲלָה֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל תִסֹּ֤ב מִמַּטֶּ֖ה אֶל־ מַטֶּ֑ה כִּ֣י אִ֗ישׁ בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ יִדְבְּק֖וּ בְּנַחֲלַת֙ מַטֵּ֣ה אֲבֹתָ֔יו wə·lō- na·ḥă·lāh liḇ·nê yiś·rā·’êl ṯis·sōḇ mim·maṭ·ṭeh ’el- maṭ·ṭeh kî ’îš bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl yiḏ·bə·qū bə·na·ḥă·laṯ maṭ·ṭêh ’ă·ḇō·ṯāw — WLC · 7

Every daughter who possesses an inheritance vvv from any Israelite… tribe must marry… within a clan of the tribe of her father, so that every Israelite… will possess the inheritance of his fathers.

No inheritance may be transferred from one tribe to another, for each tribe vvv of Israel must retain its inheritance.”

- Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to cousins on their father’s side.
וַתִּהְיֶ֜ינָה מַחְלָ֣ה תִרְצָ֗ה וְחָגְלָ֧ה וּמִלְכָּ֛ה וְנֹעָ֖ה בְּנ֣וֹת צְלָפְחָ֑ד לְנָשִֽׁים׃ לִבְנֵ֥י דֹדֵיהֶ֖ן wat·tih·ye·nāh maḥ·lāh ṯir·ṣāh wə·ḥā·ḡə·lāh ū·mil·kāh wə·nō·‘āh bə·nō·wṯ ṣə·lā·p̄ə·ḥāḏ lə·nā·šîm liḇ·nê ḏō·ḏê·hen — WLC · 11

They married… within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained within the tribe of their father’s clan.

These are the commandments and ordinances that [[YHWH|the LORD]] gave the Israelites… through Moses… on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
