Chapter 14

Pharaoh Pursues the Israelites

1

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses…,

Yah·weh way·ḏab·bêr ’el- mō·šeh lê·mōrWLC · 1

2

“Tell the Israelites… to turn back and encamp before vvv Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol… and the sea. You are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite vvv Baal-zephon…

— LXX Swete · 2

3

For Pharaoh will say vvv of the Israelites, ‘They are wandering the land in confusion; the wilderness has boxed them in.’

— LXX Swete · 3

4

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue them. But I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am [[YHWH|the LORD]].” So this is what the Israelites did.

וְחִזַּקְתִּ֣י אֶת־ פַּרְעֹה֮ לֵב־ וְרָדַ֣ף אַחֲרֵיהֶם֒ וְאִכָּבְדָ֤ה בְּפַרְעֹה֙ וּבְכָל־ חֵיל֔וֹ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְיָדְע֥וּ כִּֽי־ אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כֵֽן׃ וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־ wə·ḥiz·zaq·tî ’eṯ- par·‘ōh lêḇ- wə·rā·ḏap̄ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem wə·’ik·kā·ḇə·ḏāh bə·p̄ar·‘ōh ū·ḇə·ḵāl ḥê·lōw miṣ·ra·yim wə·yā·ḏə·‘ū kî- ’ă·nî Yah·weh ḵên way·ya·‘ă·śū-WLC · 4

— LXX Swete · 4

5

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about [them] and said, “What… have we done?… We have released Israel from serving us.”

לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיֻּגַּד֙ כִּ֥י הָעָ֑ם בָרַ֖ח פַּרְעֹ֤ה וַעֲבָדָיו֙ וַ֠יֵּהָפֵךְ לְבַ֨ב אֶל־ הָעָ֔ם וַיֹּֽאמרוּ֙ מַה־ זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־ שִׁלַּ֥חְנוּ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵעָבְדֵֽנוּ׃ lə·me·leḵ miṣ·ra·yim way·yug·gaḏ kî hā·‘ām ḇā·raḥ par·‘ōh wa·‘ă·ḇā·ḏāw way·yê·hā·p̄êḵ lə·ḇaḇ ’el- hā·‘ām way·yō·m·rū mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·nū kî- šil·laḥ·nū ’eṯ- yiś·rā·’êl mê·‘ā·ḇə·ḏê·nūWLC · 5

6

So [Pharaoh] prepared his chariot and took his army with him.

וַיֶּאְסֹ֖ר אֶת־ רִכְבּ֑וֹ וְאֶת־ לָקַ֥ח עַמּ֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃ way·ye’·sōr ’eṯ- riḵ·bōw wə·’eṯ- lā·qaḥ ‘am·mōw ‘im·mōwWLC · 6

7

He took 600… of the best chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.

וַיִּקַּ֗ח שֵׁשׁ־ מֵא֥וֹת בָּח֔וּר רֶ֙כֶב֙ וְכֹ֖ל רֶ֣כֶב מִצְרָ֑יִם וְשָׁלִשִׁ֖ם עַל־ כֻּלּֽוֹ׃ way·yiq·qaḥ šêš- mê·’ō·wṯ bā·ḥūr re·ḵeḇ wə·ḵōl re·ḵeḇ miṣ·rā·yim wə·šā·li·šim ‘al- kul·lōwWLC · 7

— LXX Swete · 7

8

And [[YHWH|the LORD]] hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt so that he pursued… the Israelites…, - who were marching out defiantly…

Yah·weh ’eṯ- way·ḥaz·zêq lêḇ par·‘ōh me·leḵ miṣ·ra·yim way·yir·dōp̄ ’a·ḥă·rê bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ū·ḇə·nê yiś·rā·’êl yō·ṣə·’îm bə·yāḏ rā·māhWLC · 8

— LXX Swete · 8

9

The Egyptians— all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops— pursued [the Israelites] and overtook them as they camped by the sea near vvv Pi-hahiroth, opposite vvv Baal-zephon.

מִצְרַ֜יִם כָּל־ פַּרְעֹ֔ה סוּס֙ רֶ֣כֶב וּפָרָשָׁ֖יו וְחֵיל֑וֹ וַיִּרְדְּפ֨וּ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם וַיַּשִּׂ֤יגוּ אוֹתָם֙ חֹנִ֣ים עַל־ הַיָּ֔ם עַל־ פִּי֙ הַֽחִירֹ֔ת לִפְנֵ֖י בַּ֥עַל צְפֹֽן׃ miṣ·ra·yim kāl- par·‘ōh sūs re·ḵeḇ ū·p̄ā·rā·šāw wə·ḥê·lōw way·yir·də·p̄ū ’a·ḥă·rê·hem way·yaś·śî·ḡū ’ō·w·ṯām ḥō·nîm ‘al- hay·yām ‘al- pî ha·ḥî·rōṯ lip̄·nê ba·‘al ṣə·p̄ōnWLC · 9

10

As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites… looked up… and saw the Egyptians marching after them, and [they]… were terrified… and cried out to [[YHWH|the LORD]].

וּפַרְעֹ֖ה הִקְרִ֑יב בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל אֶת־ וַיִּשְׂאוּ֩ עֵינֵיהֶ֜ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה מִצְרַ֣יִם׀ נֹסֵ֣עַ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיִּֽירְאוּ֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַיִּצְעֲק֥וּ אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃ ū·p̄ar·‘ōh hiq·rîḇ ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·yiś·’ū ‘ê·nê·hem wə·hin·nêh miṣ·ra·yim nō·sê·a‘ ’a·ḥă·rê·hem ḇə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl way·yî·rə·’ū mə·’ōḏ way·yiṣ·‘ă·qū ’el- Yah·wehWLC · 10

11

They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us into the wilderness to die? What… have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ אֶל־ מֹשֶׁה֒ אֵין־ הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י קְבָרִים֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם לְקַחְתָּ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לָמ֣וּת מַה־ זֹּאת֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֔נוּ לְהוֹצִיאָ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ way·yō·mə·rū ’el- mō·šeh ’ên- ha·mib·bə·lî qə·ḇā·rîm bə·miṣ·ra·yim lə·qaḥ·tā·nū bam·miḏ·bār lā·mūṯ mah- zōṯ ‘ā·śî·ṯā lā·nū lə·hō·w·ṣî·’ā·nū mim·miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 11

12

{Did we} not - say to you in Egypt…, ‘Leave us alone… so that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

הֲלֹא־ זֶ֣ה הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבַּ֨רְנוּ אֵלֶ֤יךָ בְמִצְרַ֙יִם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר חֲדַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ וְנַֽעַבְדָ֣ה אֶת־ מִצְרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י ט֥וֹב לָ֙נוּ֙ עֲבֹ֣ד אֶת־ מִצְרַ֔יִם מִמֻּתֵ֖נוּ בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ hă·lō- zeh had·dā·ḇār ’ă·šer dib·bar·nū ’ê·le·ḵā ḇə·miṣ·ra·yim lê·mōr ḥă·ḏal mim·men·nū wə·na·‘aḇ·ḏāh ’eṯ- miṣ·rā·yim kî ṭō·wḇ lā·nū ‘ă·ḇōḏ ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim mim·mu·ṯê·nū bam·miḏ·bārWLC · 12

13

But Moses told… the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see [[YHWH|the LORD]]’s salvation, which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians you see today -…, you will never… see again…

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell… the Israelites… to go forward.

And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, so that the Israelites… can go through the sea on dry ground.

And I… will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. Then I will gain honor by means of Pharaoh and all his army and chariots and horsemen.

19

And the angel of God, who had gone before the camp of Israel, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from before them and stood behind them,

21

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night [[YHWH|the LORD]] drove back the sea with a strong east wind that turned [it] into dry land. So the waters were divided,

and the Israelites… went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

23

And the Egyptians chased after them— all Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen— and followed them into… the sea.

24

At morning watch, however, [[YHWH|the LORD]] looked down on the army of the Egyptians from the pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion -…

הַבֹּ֔קֶר בְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶת וַֽיְהִי֙ יְהוָה֙ וַיַּשְׁקֵ֤ף אֶל־ מַחֲנֵ֣ה מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּעַמּ֥וּד אֵ֖שׁ וְעָנָ֑ן וַיָּ֕הָם אֵ֖ת מַחֲנֵ֥ה מִצְרָֽיִם׃ hab·bō·qer bə·’aš·mō·reṯ way·hî Yah·weh way·yaš·qêp̄ ’el- ma·ḥă·nêh miṣ·ra·yim bə·‘am·mūḏ ’êš wə·‘ā·nān way·yā·hām ’êṯ ma·ḥă·nêh miṣ·rā·yimWLC · 24

He caused their chariot wheels to wobble, so that they had difficulty driving. “Let us flee from the Israelites,” said the Egyptians, “for [[YHWH|the LORD]] is fighting for them against Egypt!”

מַרְכְּבֹתָ֔יו אֹפַ֣ן וַיָּ֗סַר אֵ֚ת בִּכְבֵדֻ֑ת וַֽיְנַהֲגֵ֖הוּ אָנ֙וּסָה֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מִצְרַ֗יִם כִּ֣י יְהוָ֔ה נִלְחָ֥ם לָהֶ֖ם בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃פ mar·kə·ḇō·ṯāw ’ō·p̄an way·yā·sar ’êṯ biḵ·ḇê·ḏuṯ way·na·hă·ḡê·hū ’ā·nū·sāh mip·pə·nê yiś·rā·’êl way·yō·mer miṣ·ra·yim kî Yah·weh nil·ḥām lā·hem bə·miṣ·rå̄·yimWLC · 25

— LXX Swete · 25

26

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians [and] their chariots… and horsemen.”

Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh nə·ṭêh ’eṯ- yā·ḏə·ḵā ‘al- hay·yām ham·ma·yim wə·yā·šu·ḇū ‘al- miṣ·ra·yim ‘al- riḵ·bōw wə·‘al- pā·rā·šāwWLC · 26

— LXX Swete · 26

27

So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak… the sea returned to its normal state. As the Egyptians were retreating -, [[YHWH|the LORD]] - swept them into the sea.

מֹשֶׁ֨ה אֶת־ וַיֵּט֩ יָד֜וֹ עַל־ הַיָּ֗ם לִפְנ֥וֹת בֹּ֙קֶר֙ הַיָּ֜ם וַיָּ֨שָׁב לְאֵ֣יתָנ֔וֹ וּמִצְרַ֖יִם נָסִ֣ים לִקְרָאת֑וֹ יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־ מִצְרַ֖יִם וַיְנַעֵ֧ר בְּת֥וֹךְ הַיָּֽם׃ mō·šeh ’eṯ- way·yêṭ yā·ḏōw ‘al- hay·yām lip̄·nō·wṯ bō·qer hay·yām way·yā·šāḇ lə·’ê·ṯā·nōw ū·miṣ·ra·yim nā·sîm liq·rā·ṯōw Yah·weh ’eṯ- miṣ·ra·yim way·na·‘êr bə·ṯō·wḵ hay·yāmWLC · 27

— LXX Swete · 27

28

The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen— the entire army of Pharaoh that had chased [the Israelites] into the sea. Not one of them survived…

הַמַּ֗יִם וַיָּשֻׁ֣בוּ וַיְכַסּ֤וּ אֶת־ הָרֶ֙כֶב֙ וְאֶת־ הַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים לְכֹל֙ חֵ֣יל פַּרְעֹ֔ה הַבָּאִ֥ים אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם בַּיָּ֑ם לֹֽא־ אֶחָֽד׃ בָּהֶ֖ם נִשְׁאַ֥ר עַד־ ham·ma·yim way·yā·šu·ḇū way·ḵas·sū ’eṯ- hā·re·ḵeḇ wə·’eṯ- hap·pā·rā·šîm lə·ḵōl ḥêl par·‘ōh hab·bā·’îm ’a·ḥă·rê·hem bay·yām lō- ’e·ḥāḏ bā·hem niš·’ar ‘aḏ-WLC · 28

— LXX Swete · 28

29

But the Israelites… had walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

30

That day [[YHWH|the LORD]] saved Israel from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore…

הַה֛וּא אֶת־ בַּיּ֥וֹם יְהוָ֜ה וַיּ֨וֹשַׁע יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִיַּ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יִם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־ וַיַּ֤רְא מִצְרַ֔יִם מֵ֖ת עַל־ שְׂפַ֥ת הַיָּֽם׃ ha·hū ’eṯ- bay·yō·wm Yah·weh way·yō·wō·ša‘ yiś·rā·’êl mî·yaḏ miṣ·rā·yim yiś·rā·’êl ’eṯ- way·yar miṣ·ra·yim mêṯ ‘al- śə·p̄aṯ hay·yāmWLC · 30

31

When Israel saw the great power that [[YHWH|the LORD]] had exercised over the Egyptians, the people feared [[YHWH|the LORD]] and believed in Him and in His servant Moses.
