Chapter 25

Moab Seduces Israel

1

While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בַּשִּׁטִּ֑ים הָעָ֔ם וַיָּ֣חֶל לִזְנ֖וֹת אֶל־ בְּנ֥וֹת מוֹאָֽב׃ yiś·rā·’êl way·yê·šeḇ baš·šiṭ·ṭîm hā·‘ām way·yā·ḥel liz·nō·wṯ ’el- bə·nō·wṯ mō·w·’āḇWLC · 1

— LXX Swete · 1

2

who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.

וַתִּקְרֶ֣אןָ לָעָ֔ם לְזִבְחֵ֖י אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ן הָעָ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אכַל וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֖וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽן׃ wat·tiq·re·nā lā·‘ām lə·ziḇ·ḥê ’ĕ·lō·hê·hen hā·‘ām way·yō·ḵal way·yiš·ta·ḥăw·wū lê·lō·hê·henWLC · 2

3

So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of [[YHWH|the LORD]] burned against [them].

יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְבַ֣עַל וַיִּצָּ֥מֶד פְּע֑וֹר אַ֥ף יְהוָ֖ה וַיִּֽחַר־ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ yiś·rā·’êl lə·ḇa·‘al way·yiṣ·ṣā·meḏ pə·‘ō·wr ’ap̄ Yah·weh way·yi·ḥar- bə·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 3

— LXX Swete · 3

4

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before [[YHWH|the LORD]], so that [His] fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

Yah·weh way·yō·mer ’el- mō·šeh qaḥ ’eṯ- kāl- rā·šê hā·‘ām wə·hō·w·qa‘ ’ō·w·ṯām ne·ḡeḏ haš·šā·meš Yah·weh Yah·weh ḥă·rō·wn ’ap̄- wə·yā·šōḇ mî·yiś·rā·’êlWLC · 4

— LXX Swete · 4

5

So Moses… told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men… who have joined in worshiping vvv Baal of Peor.”

מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שֹׁפְטֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל הִרְגוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֲנָשָׁ֔יו הַנִּצְמָדִ֖ים לְבַ֥עַל פְּעֽוֹר׃ mō·šeh ’el- way·yō·mer šō·p̄ə·ṭê yiś·rā·’êl hir·ḡū ’îš ’ă·nā·šāw han·niṣ·mā·ḏîm lə·ḇa·‘al pə·‘ō·wrWLC · 5

The Zeal of Phinehas

6

Just then an Israelite… man vvv brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses [and] the whole congregation… of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

וְהִנֵּ֡ה מִבְּנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אִישׁ֩ בָּ֗א וַיַּקְרֵ֤ב אֶל־ אֶחָיו֙ אֶת־ הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית לְעֵינֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה וּלְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־ עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵי־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהֵ֣מָּה בֹכִ֔ים פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃ wə·hin·nêh mib·bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl ’îš bā way·yaq·rêḇ ’el- ’e·ḥāw ’eṯ- ham·miḏ·yā·nîṯ lə·‘ê·nê mō·šeh ū·lə·‘ê·nê kāl- ‘ă·ḏaṯ bə·nê- yiś·rā·’êl wə·hêm·māh ḇō·ḵîm pe·ṯaḥ ’ō·hel mō·w·‘êḏWLC · 6

7

On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

וַיַּ֗רְא פִּֽינְחָס֙ בֶּן־ אֶלְעָזָ֔ר בֶּֽן־ אַהֲרֹ֖ן הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וַיָּ֙קָם֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הָֽעֵדָ֔ה וַיִּקַּ֥ח רֹ֖מַח בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ way·yar pî·nə·ḥās ben- ’el·‘ā·zār ben- ’a·hă·rōn hak·kō·hên way·yā·qām mit·tō·wḵ hā·‘ê·ḏāh way·yiq·qaḥ rō·maḥ bə·yā·ḏōwWLC · 7

8

followed… the Israelite… into the tent, and drove [the spear] through both of them— vvv through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites… was halted,

וַ֠יָּבֹא אַחַ֨ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אִֽישׁ־ אֶל־ הַקֻּבָּ֗ה וַיִּדְקֹר֙ אֶת־ שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֚ת אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֶת־ אֶל־ קֳבָתָ֑הּ הָאִשָּׁ֖ה הַמַּגֵּפָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וַתֵּֽעָצַר֙ way·yā·ḇō ’a·ḥar yiś·rā·’êl ’îš- ’el- haq·qub·bāh way·yiḏ·qōr ’eṯ- šə·nê·hem ’êṯ ’îš yiś·rā·’êl wə·’eṯ- ’el- qo·ḇā·ṯāh hā·’iš·šāh ham·mag·gê·p̄āh mê·‘al bə·nê yiś·rā·’êl wat·tê·‘ā·ṣarWLC · 8

Then [[YHWH|the LORD]] said to Moses…,
